statesman, Chief Anthony Enahoro, yesterday held top level talks with The
Patriots to seek the latter’s active involvement in the planned convocation
of a National Conference by Nigeria United for Democracy (NUD).
He specifically extended invitation to the
group of eminent Nigerians to join the NUD in setting up a planning committee
that would midwife the National Conference.
Legal luminary and chairman of The
Patriots, Chief Rotimi Williams (SAN) disclosed these at the weekend in a
one-page communique he signed on behalf of the organisation after a meeting in
his Ilupeju, Lagos chambers.
Chief Williams said The Patriots
are deeply concerned over the "deteriorating situation in the country."
He further hinted that The Patriots’
position on the invitation by Chief Enahoro would be communicated to the latter.
The Patriots
during the meting, he emphasised, reiterated its commitment to the concept of a
National Conference.
Part of the communique read: "At a meeting
of The Patriots held on October 3, 2004, in the chambers of Chief Rotimi
Williams, Chief Anthony Enahoro, on behalf of the organisations interested in
the convocation of a National Conference, presented proposals for a meeting of
organisations to form a planning committee to plan for the convocation of a
National Conference.
"The meeting extensively canvassed the
need for non-governmental organisations to sponsor National Conference because
of the deteriorating situation in the country and the failure of the federal
government to sponsor such a conference.
"The Patriots received the
invitation to join in establishing a planning committee with very keen interest
and agreed to communicate their decision on the invitation later."
Chief Enahoro’s consultation with The
Patriots came barely three days after he made a surprise appearance at the
National Unity Convention of the Alliance For Democracy (AD) in Lagos where he
underscored the need for a National Conference.
Said he: "Perhaps the most important point
which requires to be made...is that today there are two requirements for the
salvation of the Nigerian dream and the advancement of our people.
"The two requirements are a National
Conference and the empowerment of an All Progressive Front. I say confidently
that there is no other way to a peaceful solution of Nigeria’s problems.
