    Missing ship: Navy court-martials 3

    ABIODUN ADELAJA, Abuja

BARRING any last minute hitch, the Nigerian Navy will this week commence the trial of three top officers over their alleged complicity in the circumstances that led to the disappearance of MT African Pride.

Daily Champion learnt that already the three officers who are of the rank of Rear Admiral (two star generals) have been taken into custody at NNS Quorra preparatory to the inauguration of the panel by the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Admiral Sam Afolayan, to court-martial them.

The three-top officers, it was gathered, constitute the first batch of those to be court-martialled by the Navy over their alleged complicity in the missing ship saga.

Other officers implicated by the Admiral Sampson Okee-led Board of Inquiry (BOI), it was further learnt, would subsequently take their turn at the trial billed for Lagos.

Already, anxiety has heightened among Naval officers and ratings as the court-martial begins with some expressing fears of possible "miscarriage of justice."

Some of the officers who spoke to Daily Champion on condition of anonymity expressed reservations at what they called the hasty nature of the trial.

They argued that Naval authorities ought to have exercised patience pending the outcome of the report of the panel instituted by the House of Representatives to investigate the loss of the ship.

According to them, the House Committee was better placed to unearth the circumstances that led to the ship’s loss as its scope of enquiry extensive.
