SIM card: V-Mobile to crash price tomorrow

Monday, October 04, 2004

LAGOS— Mobile phone operator, Vmobile, which has consistently led the fray to push down the cost of new connection and  mobile call rate, is set to further stir up competition in the highly price conscious market by slashing the price of its SIM card.  The new price structure which will come into effect  tomorrow, according to sources in the company, will knock off the bottom  of competition and is designed to make phone line acquisition more affordable for those who do not have phones or who need a  second line.

Last month, Vmobile slashed the price of SIM card (new connection) to N2,999 with free N500 airtime, forcing other mobile  operators to respond with their own price cuts. Vmobile further stirred up the market with the extension of airtime validity,  adding more days to the normal airtime obtainable when subscribers buy recharge cards. The company increased the airtime  validity period of its N500 recharge voucher from  five days to seven days (two additional days); from 10 days to 17 days for its  N1000 card; from 20 days to 27 days and from 60 to 67 days for its N2000 and N5000 recharge cards respectively. Airtime  validity period for the N20,000 recharge cards was equally extended to 367 days from the previous time window of 360 days  thus giving subscribers longer time to use their credit before they need to recharge their phone.

On another plank, Vmobile introduced the per second option into Bumpa card, its call tariff reducing card, thus offering  subscribers the opportunity to lower their call rate to 40k per second from the usual 80k per second for pre-paid customers on  mobile networks.
