Gana hints on move to convoke National Confab

Sina Babasola
Monday, October 04, 2004

IBADAN—Strong indications emerged yesterday in Ibadan that President Olusegun Obasanjo may have finally agreed to the  agitation for the convocation of a national conference, saying the political restructuring of Nigeria has become imperative.

The Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs, Professor Jerry Gana who gave this hint said that he and the President’s Special  Adviser on Constitutional Matters, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, share the view that there should be a national conference where the  different peoples that make up the country could sit at a table and discuss their political relationship.

Prof.Gana also spoke on the spate of crisis in the Niger-Delta which he blamed on external forces desperate to cause problems  in the area due to oil. The Political Adviser to the President who spoke at the 60th Birthday celebration of eminent broadcast  manager, Dr Yemi Farounbi explained that it has become obvious that there was a need for political reforms in the country.
According to him, the states for instance, have become too small that they could no longer counter balance the Federal  Government.

The former Minister of Information who said that the present six geo-political zonal structure would be a good structure to  monitor developments in the country advocated for four tiers of government viz: federal, state, local government and  development areas. Gana however said that the conference that he and his colleague were proposing should not be a sovereign  conference. “Let us sit and agree so that we can work together. The prospects of peace in Plateau have proved that when  erstwhile antagonistic groups sit at a table, they could understand themselves better and can work for peace”.
