KANO — THREE months after the closure of Kano State drug market in Sabon Gari, the Director-General of National  Agency for Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr. Dora Akunyili has ordered  the reopening of the drug market,  saying they have shown remorse and vowed never to sell fake drugs again.

Addressing journalists Sunday,  the director Technical services, Alhaji Hashim Yusuf said the decision to close down the Market  was taken in order to safe guard the health of millions of unsuspecting innocent Nigerian who patronize them and fall victims of   the hazardous effects of the fakedrugs. The NAFDAC boss explained that the agency was compelled to raid the market because  the drug dealers refused to comply with the directives given to them to register all imported drugs before selling them to the  public, adding that as a result of the raid many fake and expired drugs were detected  in the market.

Her words: “As a result of the raid in Kano drug market, the agency had clean the Augean stable and sanitized the market.  Fake, expired, counterfeit and unregistered drugs stocked in various shops have been screened out and impounded by  NAFDAC.” The NAFDAC director general also disclosed that the state branch of the National Association of Patent and  Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED) had hand over N2 million worth of fake drugs mopped up from their members in  the market to NAFDAC for destruction as well as vowed never to stock such products again.
