Govt urges states, councils to increase funding for health sector
FOLLOWING the deplorable state of primary health care delivery in the country, the Federal Government has called for increased budgetary allocations by the states and councils.
The Chairman, Governing Board of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, (NPHCDA), Dr. Akanni Sorungbe, made the call in a meeting with the Sokoto State Government, members of the state House of Assembly and other stakeholders in the state.
This, he said was due to the disturbing trends on the state of health care delivery in the country. The agency, through the Federal Ministry of Health had been mandated by the Presidency to accelerate the implementation of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in fourteen states, including Sokoto State as part of the pilot scheme towards the revitalisation of primary health care delivery.
Sorungbe said the Millennium Development Goals, adopted by the United Nations in 2000, provided another opportunity for concerted action to improve the health of the people.
He explained that the project, which has placed health at the heart of development, had been accepted globally as a framework for measuring developmental progress.
He also listed five of the eight goals of the Millennium Development Targets as eradication of poverty and hunger, reduction in the death of children and pregnancy-related death among women, malaria and Human Immune Virus and Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome HIV/AIDs.
The thrust of the current revitalisation of primary health care, the chairman emphasised, would focus on increase in the immunisation of children and pregnant women and support for people living with HIV/AIDs.
Sorungbe explained that the meeting, which featured intensive consultation and joint planning among NPHCDA, states and local councils health teams was crucial to the success of the agency's assignment in the implementation of the Presidential mandate to revitalise primary health care in the country.
