Govt denies favouritism towards Niger Delta
CONTRARY to claims and insinuations that selective talks were being held with some groups to the exclusion of the Igbo, government disclosed at the weekend that President Olusegun Obasanjo has held meetings with Chief Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Chief Chekwas Okorie, the presidential candidate and the national chairman of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) respectively.
In fact, three of such dialogue sessions have taken place, according to Obasanjo's Special Assistant on Media, Mrs. Remi Oyo.
She made the clarification in an interview with The Guardian yesterday following the criticisms that trailed the President's meeting last week with the leaders of two militant Niger Delta groups, Asari Dokubo and Ateke Tom in Abuja.
According to Oyo, the President believes in dialogue with all aggrieved groups and persons in order to promote peace and national unity.
She expressed regtrets that Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Okorie have, however, always reneged on the gentleman agreements they reached with the President by returning to their supporters to sing the old song of destructive criticism.
Oyo also denied that some agreements were reached with Dokubo by the Federal Government. According to her, Dokubo only agreed with Ateke to a ceasefire in their mutually destructive engagements.
