Bayelsa to raise corps members' pay
From Willie Etim, Yenagoa

THE Bayelsa State government has said it would increase the monthly allowance for corps members posted to the state to enhance their productivity.

Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha said at the closing ceremony of the orientation course for 2004 batch of corps members at Kaiama, Headquarters of Kolokuma/Opolima Local Council that the NYSC Scheme since inception over 31 years ago had continued to act as catalyst for development and national unity.

The governor, who was represented his deputy, Dr Goodluck Jonathan reiterated that he would support the scheme and that successive administrations in the state will continue to identify with its aspirations.

He warned corps members against unnecessary travelling as this would expose them to danger and disruption of their service.

The governor praised the grassroots-oriented policy of the NYSC, which stipulates posting of corps members to secondary schools for primary assignment. He said that would help government in the implementation of the Universal Basic Education and Integrated Rural Development Programmes of the state government.

In an address, the state co-ordinator of the NYSC, Mrs. Justina Andriya, appealed to local council chairmen, community based organisations and all corps employers in the public and private sectors in the state to fulfil their obligations to the scheme by improving the welfare of the corps members. According to her, this will greatly motivate them for optimal productivity at their places of primary assignment.

According to her, for corps members to be properly integrated with the grassroots, they should accept to serve in rural communities and indigenous small-scale enterprises.
