Bafyau got it all wrong!
SIR: The attention of the Office of the Vice President, has been drawn to a series of unwarranted and unprovoked attacks on the person of Vice President, Atiku Abubakar by former NLC President Pascal Bafyau. Without offering any evidence, he accused the Vice President of being solely responsible for the problems in Numan, Adamawa State, which led to the deposition of the former Hamma Bachama, Freddie Soditi Bongo.
The Vice President's role in the matter has been that of a peacemaker. He has worked tirelessly with the State Government to reconcile all the warring parties and restore peace and harmony to Numan. As a statesman, Atiku has never taken sides in the crisis. It is therefore untrue to accuse the Vice President of partisanship. The Vice President cannot be held responsible for the fate that befell the former Hamma Bachama.
Bafyau lied to have alleged that the Vice President visited Numan and spoke only to the Moslems, implying that he took sides with the Moslems. It is clear that Bafyau does not know the Atiku he was accusing. The Vice President is well known all over the world for being a detribalised and open-minded. Unlike Bafyau, the Vice President has never been known to fan the embers of ethnic or religious hatred. We would like to appeal to Bafyau to find something more productive to do rather than engage in name-calling and baseless allegations.
Vice President Atiku Abubakar is a political leader who brings together, under one umbrella, diverse ethnic groups in Adamawa State and Nigeria. Atiku's detribalised posture has earned him enormous influence and admiration. His infectious humility and openness has been hailed by all and sundry.
Atiku Abubakar remains a peace promoter not only in Adamawa State, his immediate political constituency, but in Nigeria and beyond.
