The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has called on the federal government to immediately reverse the recent increases in fuel price, describing it as madness, unwarranted, unfair and unjust.
In a press statement issued by its publicity secretary, Mallam Aliyu Hayatu, in Kaduna yesterday, ACF said the inability of government to restore meaningful production by our refineries showed its unwillingness to discharge its major welfare obligation.
It said one of the benefits of Nigeria’s position as a major oil producing nation was that Nigerians expect from this “divine generosity” an uninterrupted supply of oil at a price that is moderate and of this big-time oil producing status.
“It is an increase which is not only in bad taste, but almost certainly, in bad faith. This is particularly so because the increase in the price of kerosene which is used for lighting will have devastating effects on the greatest proportion of the national population.”
“The taxis, buses and other commercial vehicles will in the same vein effect an upward review of their charges. The cost of foodstuffs will then be increased to reflect this upward review of freight and other charges.
“Government should be well aware therefore that any increase in fuel cost will only overburden the already severely overburdened ordinary citizens of this country.
“Government has an obligation to demonstrate compassion and merciful concern in its treatment of citizens. This continuing escalation of this pump price of fuel only appears to work and defy this obligation,” the ACF declared.
It said though the forum is aware of the reasons driving government to privatise and deregulate, it wishes to state emphatically that the policy should not be madness.
“ACF wishes to state with every sense of responsibility that persistent increases in fuel cost without due regards for the welfare of the mass of the Nigerian people is an abdication of official welfare responsibility and obligation,” the ACF lamented. |
