Robbers hijack bus, 70 passengers missing

    VINCENT ADEKOYE, Benin

A luxury bus with about 70 passengers, which was attacked by armed robbers and subsequently driven away by the hoodlums, last Monday in Benin, Edo State, is said to have disappeared without a trace.

Consequent upon the development, a contingent of armed detectives from the state police command has swung into action combing the nooks and crannies of the state for the bus and its passengers.

The 13-man robbery gang reportedly stormed the Lagos-bound bus at about noon, along Ikpoba hill, killing two of the passengers, police said.

According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the State Command, Mr. Fatai Kinyomi, the armed bandits, who were carrying AK-47 assault rifles, had stopped the bus and opened fire on it.

Mr. Kinyomi added that a middle-aged woman and one other passenger died on the spot while over 200 shells expended bullets were recovered from the scene of the robbery.

The robbers were said to have taken over the bus and driven it back towards Agbor road.

Daily Champion gathered at the headquarters of the command in Benin yesterday that some armed policemen have been deployed by the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Paul Ochonu to locate the whereabouts of the bus with its passengers.

The command is said to have also sent signals to neighbouring police formations so as to help in locating the bus.

As at press time, pressure had mounted on the command to recover the vehicle as worried relations of some of its occupants besieged the headquarters.

The ill-fated bus belongs to a popular transport company in the Eastern part of the country.
