LABOUR STRIKE: N/Assembly Meets NLC, NNPC, PPPRA Today
By Anselm Okolo, Abuja.

The stage is now set for another showdown between the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the government over latest increases in the pump price of petroleum products in the country.
Rising from a meeting of the National Executive Committee, NEC, of the Congress, Monday at Labour House Abuja, NLC handed out a 14-day ultimatum to government within which it must revert to the prevailing pump price prior September 23.

And to show its seriousness over the matter the central labour body also called on workerd to boycott all activities lined up by government to commemorate Nigeria’s 44th independence day anniversary which comes up on Friday, 1st October.

Addressing journalists at the end of the meeting, National President of the NLC, Adams Oshiomhole said government failing to heed its decision, “we will call on Nigerians to begin a stay-at-home protest October 11, until the decision is heeded,” adding “we are unanimous and committed to this decision. God helping us we will accomplish all that we have set out in this communiqué.”
He said this protest was on the latest increase in the pump price of petroleum products in the country and had nothing to do with the judgment proscribing the office of the NLC President by a federal high court presided by Justice Roseline Ukeje.

He however called on Nigerians to support the NLC on this protest as “this country of ours is worth fighting for, and the reason for this protest could not have been better.”

Shortly after Justice Ukeje’s ruling permitting the controversial N1.50K fuel tax, marketers last week pushed up prices of petroleum products with petrol now selling for at least N52 per litre up from its previous price of N43 per litre, a move that has drawn wide public comdemnations.
