The absence of some key members of Nigeria’s Super
Eagles in Saturday’s crucial World and Nations cup qualifier
against Gabon’s Azingo Stars in Libreville due to injuries,
is giving the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) cause for
regret.
Secretary General of the NFA, Taiwo Ogunjobi, told Daily Sunsport
on phone from Abuja Wednesday that the absence of team captain,
Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Obafemi Martins, John Utaka and Julius
Aghahowa would no doubt be felt on Saturday, but expressed
optimism that the team would triumph.
“I still believe that we have a very good team going
to Gabon. Most of our players are stars in Europe just like
Okocha and they have provided results in the past so that
we have confidence in their abilities,” Ogunjobi said.
About 15 players made up of 11 foreign-based stars and four
home-based players would depart Lagos by 1:45 pm Thursday
with Air Gabon to Libreville.
Another three foreign-based stars including Nwankwo Kanu,
Joseph Yobo and Joseph Enakharire would be joining the team
in Libreville from London.
“If we can win this match that means we are through,
home and dry,” added the Secretary General just as it
emerged that the France-based duo of Wilson Oruma and Victor
Agali will not be coming.
NFA had expected both players to further strenghten the squad
after contacting their clubs for their release.
“We have Aiyegbeni. He’s a great star and so are
Osaze, Olofinjana and others who are going to play against
Gabon. By the special Grace of God, we are hoping for victory,”
Ogunjobi said.
The Secretary-General explained that it was NFA’s belief
that if Nigeria should secure the three points against Gabon
this weekend, the country will have a better chance of qualifying
for the World Cup and Africa Nations Cup finals.
He also re-affirmed earlier reports that the country’s
female National team, the Super Falcons who are currently
holed up in South Africa will arrive Nigeria on Friday.
Ogunjobi said the NFA has succeeded in getting a confirmed
return ticket for the girls but the reception earlier scheduled
for the Falcons has been shifted indefinitely.
