Student robbers shot
By CHRISTIAN OCHIAMA, Enugu
Thursday, October 7, 2004

Nemesis caught up with a gang of student robbers from University of Nigeria, Nsukka when one of them was gunned down in a shoot out with the police in the early hours of Monday.

The deceased, Chimezie Ekere was a diploma student of Agriculture Department of the University. His father is also a staff of the same university.
According to impeccable police sources, "one Sunday Omeke who resides in the Umeano/Beach junction area of Nsukka Urban, at about 3a.m Monday, sent a save our souls message to the police claiming that his family was under siege."

The source continued on receiving this SOS, men of the anti-robbery squad were dispatch to the scene on arrival, they came under heavy fire. In the ensuring gun battle, Chimezie was shot, he died on his way to the hospital."

Daily Sun gathered that one of the robbers who sustained bullet wounds is still on the run and is being sought by the police.
The body of Chimezie was displayed at the Nsukka Urban police station but our cameraman was barred from taking any shots of his corpse.
Daily Sun police source further said that that was the second time robbery gangs from the university were attacking the same Sunday Omeke.

"In the first attack on September 12, 2004, the gang was said to have earlier ordered the man (Omeke) to leave N300,000 for them at a specified point. The man could only afford N30,000," our source said.
Continuing he said "the gang came and collected the said amount. Not satisfied, they telephoned him and complained that he did not keep to their agreement. They insisted that he must make available that N300,000 on that 12th and warned him of the fatal implications of taking them for a ride."

Daily Sun further learnt that it was at this point that Omeke decided to involve the police. He was advised to place a sack at the agreed point, so, at 8p.m of that day (September 12) the gang arrived to take their loot not knowing it was a trap by the police.

Two members of a gang were said to have arrived early to survey the scene. Satisfied, apparently, one diploma student in the department of Public Administration, University of Nigeria made to cart away the sack and was gunned down. The other escaped with gun shot wounds while two others were arrested.
Daily Sun traced Mr Sunday Omeke to his residence in Nsukka but was told that "he might have evacuated his family to avert further attacks that could lead to loss of lives."
