I will like to congratulate my fellow countrymen and women on our 44th independence anniversary. I believe it’s a privilege for us all to witness thiAs Aday for our founding fathers had longed to see such a day but were unfortunate.
Ideally we are all supposed to be happy on a day like this as it marks another chapter in our nation’s history. We are supposed to be celebrating political, economic, and social liberation. Politically in terms of free and fair elections, freedom of association and a lot of others.
In economic terms; high living standard, minimal poverty, low unemployment rate and lots of others. Socially in terms of; security of lives and property, a functional infrastructure, religious and ethnic tolerance and psychological soundness.
All these are what ideally we are supposed to be celebrating at 44 and even lots more to mention.
But then, in actual term we are celebrating none of these, politically, economically and even socially. I think every October 1, should be a day Nigerians should sit down at home and count their achievements if any and map out plans to reach where those countries that attained independence with us had reached. I believe we have a long way to go especially morally. It seems two out of every four Nigerian five-year old child knows how to tell lies. You will be surprised but it’s the truth and nothing but the truth. I think our leaders are the greatest liars and are passing it down to the younger generations.
After the fight against corruption, unemployment, and poverty the next should be indiscipline and imm-orality. Cleansing our society is a challenge to us all not just the government.
The Kano state government has taken a step ahead of other states by embarking on societal re-orientation known as Adaid-aita Sahu, I wish them good luck on this. Nigeria happy birthday.
