Kure on NSG scholarship
Could you please allow me space in your widely read newspaper to draw the attention of the Niger state Governor Engr Abdulkadir Kure on the recent scholarship increment. I deem it fit to start by commending the effort of the governor for showing an unprecedented support for the plight of students studying in institutions of higher learning. This will in no small measure enhance the quality and the quantity of students as well as contributing to the emergence of a knowledge driven state.
However, the bone of contention is the percentage of the increment. A situation where medical and medical related courses students were given N50,000 each, engineering students N20,000 each and others N5,000 each is quiet unfair. Let us even assume that the yardstick used for the increment is the expensis incurred by the students while in school, I think in this situation environmental courses such as architechture, urban and regional planning, estate management, building technology and geography should have an upper hand over their engineering counterparts. I am not suggesting that, that of medical and engineering students should not be higher but the gap should not be too much. For instance, in Kaduna state medical students are paid N25,000 each ,sciences N15,000 each and others N9,000 each. In this case the gap is rational. The fact is that you dont expect every student to be in medicine or engineering. This has brought us to a sharp conclusion that decision-making and implementation in Nigeria is influenced by the personal disposition of some people without due respect to public opinion.
In conclusion, I fervently pray and hope that the governor will address this grievances within the shortest possible time.
