N5.8b for repair of 1,000 roads, Niger Bridge

State House, Abuja
The Federal Government on Wednesday
approved N5.8 billion for the Works Ministry to enable it start work on the rehabilitation of
1,000 federal roads in the country.
The approval was made at the Federal
Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Olusegun Obasanjo in
Abuja.
The move is to ensure that roads become
motorable for people that will be travelling during the Christmas and New Year
when traffic is expected to increase on the highways.
Briefing State House Correspondents at
the end of the meeting, Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, said
government would rehabilitate all the 32,200 kilometres of roads in bad state
simultaneously.
The ministry would also commence the
construction of four bridges, including the second Niger Bridge at Onitsha;
Mfon Bridge in Cross River State, Ibi Bridge in Taraba State and Loko Bridge
linking Benue and Nassarawa states.
Ogunlewe praised the Federal Roads
Maintenance Agency for successfully handling the 500 roads earlier flagged-off
for rehabilitation in the country, saying the rehabilitation work was halted
because of the rains.
“We now have N5.8 billion to do
massive road repairs because during the Christmas, Sallah and New Year
festivities, people would go home and it would be gladdening to appreciate the
effort of Mr. President and the ministry of finance on this. All Nigerians will
be very happy during the dry season,” he stated.
On the state of federal roads in the
South-East, especially the Owerri/Onitsha road, the minister doubted the
capability of the firm handling the project to do a good job.
The firm, Messrs CCC, had been paid about
N6 billion but not much progress had been made on the project, Ogunlewe said,
adding that he is not comfortable with the work done so far.
