A chieftain of the Alliance for Democracy
(AD) in Lagos State, Rev James Odunmbaku on Wednesday said the appointment of
Chief Ayo Fasanmi as the deputy leader of Afenifere would elevate the
status of the organisation. He also lauded the decision of the members to
separate the group from the party.
In his reaction to Tuesday’s
meeting in Lagos where Fasanmi emerged as successor to the late Chief Bola Ige,
Odumbaku said that with the decision to separate Afenifere from the AD, the
party would become stronger and have a national outlook.
Odunmbaku, who is the chairman of Bola
Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Organisation, (BATICO) said that the emergence of Fasanmi
is a triumph of democracy over dictatorship.
According to him, both the AD and
Afenifere would be the better for it. He said: “The choice of Fasanmi
would elevate the status of Afenifere. It is also good that a motion for the
separation of the group from AD was adopted at the congress. It would earn AD
the much desired national outlook”.
The AD chieftain noted that by the
Afenifere gesture, the southwest has once again demonstrated its respect for
the democratic process. He added that the organisation stands to benefit
immensely from Fasanmi’s wealth of experience, adding that the new deputy
leader has all it takes to ensure that Afenifere continues to be relevant in
the scheme of things in the country.
Odumbaku said a new lease of life has
been injected into Afenifere, adding that with the steps taken on Tuesday,
activities of agents of destabilization in the fold who have been exploiting
the vacuum created by the death of Ige and the illness of Pa Abraham Adesanya
would come to an end.
