canvasses dress code for higher institutions

Wife of the Vice-President, Mrs Titi
Abubakar, has called on the Federal Government to design a dress code for
undergraduates in tertiary institutions.
She made the call at the 2004 Bournvita
Teachers’ Award (BTA) ceremony in Abuja, stating that the dress pattern
of female students on campus was undesirable.
According to Mrs. Abubakar, female
undergraduates have converted their schools into prostitution zones, and urged
parents to discourage the trend in their children.
The founder and chairperson of Women
Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF) also called on
parents to limit child-bearing to the number they can effectively cater for,
noting that because parents produced children more than their capability, some
of them encourage the females to go into prostitution.
She commended Cadbury Nigeria Plc for
instituting the teachers’ award, saying that it was obvious that the
challenges of salvaging education and sustaining it on the path of progress and
productivity cannot be borne by government alone.
“While it is desirable that
authorities do their part, a concerted and constructive support of the private
sector is equally desirable. To
develop our children and prepare them for the challenges of tomorrow’s
leadership, we must equip them with education and experiences that put them at
par with their peers worldwide”, she said.
Minister of Education, Professor Fabian
Osuji, in his remarks challenged teachers to remain focused in the task of
planting the seed of greatness in Nigerian children.
He called on private organisations,
companies and individuals to follow the examples of Cadbury in promoting
educational development through positive encouragement of operators in the
sector.
Managing Director of Cadbury, Mr. Bunmi
Oni, in a welcome address noted that the real strength of a nation resides on
its human capital, adding that an educated and enlightened people make for a
progressive society.
According to him, Cadbury would remain in
the vanguard of lifting the educational standard of Nigerians in whatever way
it can.
