Thursday, October 7th, 2004 HOME | Previous Page Abia to upgrade Azumini tourism center By Uche Nwosu Special Correspondent, Umuahia   A pact that will ensure that Azumini Blue River, a tourist haven in Ukwa East Local Government in Abia State, becomes an international tourism resort has been signed between the state government and an indigenous firm - the Aquada Development Corporation. The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Chief Ralph Egbu, said on Wednesday that the indigenous tourism firm would lift the standard of the area to that similar to Obudu Cattle Ranch in Cross River State and Yankari Games Reserve in Bauchi State. He said gray areas that may slow down the takeover of the tourism centre by the company was being ironed out, adding that it is expected to generate foreign exchange for the state. On whether the Azumini Blue River was mapped out for dredging and conversion into a seaport, Egbu said the government does not know of that but that the Federal Government would be notified before the project is kicked-off. The commissioner told journalists after the state executive council meeting presided over by the Education Commissioner, Professor Mkpa Agu Mkpa, that the two transmitters bought by the government for its television station would be installed as soon as they are taken delivery of. He said the government would soon begin to prepare land areas in housing estates like Evangel High School phase one, IBB phase one, Luxury Bus Terminal and Amaisu in Aba so as to allocate them.
