donates salary to poverty
eradication scheme

In an unusual show of love for his
less-privileged fellows, a lawmaker in the Imo State House of Assembly, Chief
Bede Ekeh (Ngor/Okpala), has dedicated half of his monthly salary to poverty
alleviation in his area.
He said the money would be used for computer training,
scholarships and empowering the less privileged.
He told journalists in Owerri that what he is trying to do is
the duty of the Federal Government, which controls more funds that could have
been used to assist the states and councils in the battle against poverty.
He said the government has shown that it has no respect for
the entire people of the South-East
hence there is no clear programme to ensure the eradication of poverty
in the zone.
He said despite many appeals by the governments and peoples
of the zone, the Federal Government has shut its ears to their cry for help.
Ekeh urged the government to have a change of heart in its
policy towards the people of the South-East and South-South since the resources
that generates the most revenue for the country come from the two zones.
The lawmaker advised the government to provide basic
amenities to the Niger Delta region so as to reduce clashes and violence that
have contributed to the loss of lives there.
Ekeh argued that it was shameful that oil companies live as
kings in their host communities while the owners of the resources have
continued to live in penury.
He said the violence that is prevalent oil communities is a
result of the failure of the leaders to effectively proffer practicable
solutions to the problems of the masses.
He said unless youths are gainfully employed either through
self-help projects or direct employment in organisations there would always be
crisis in flash points in the country.
Ekeh said it is lamentable that 44 years
after Nigeria gained independence from imperial rule most of her citizens have
remained slaves in their own land.
