A probe panel to look into petitions
against the former Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Isaiah Olakanmi, was on
Wednesday sworn in by the Oyo State Governor, Alhaji Rashidi Ladoja.
The panel was inaugurated, less than 24
hours after Ladoja sacked the former chief judge and swore in Justice Ruth
Gbemisola Oyetunde as the acting chief judge.
Ladoja said he was shocked by the spate of petitions
against Olakanmi and the chief registrar of Oyo State, and had to invite
retired former chief judge, Lambe Olajire Aransi to chair the judicial
commission of inquiry to look into the allegations of financial improprieties
and mal-administration against the erstwhile chief judge and registrar.
“You know people in their position
are expected to be above all reproach, but there was a petition in July 2004
and another one signed by all the judges except the chief judge in September.
We want to lay all these to rest, so this is the reason why we have to set up
this panel”, he said.
The governor declared that he was not out
to witch-hunt anybody, and expressed his belief in the separation of powers in
a democratic system.
“I believe the legislature should
be left to do its own work and the judiciary too should be independent like us
the executive. The good of the people must be paramount in our mind and the
judiciary as the last hope of the people must be seen to always be above
board”, said Ladoja.
Ladoja told the gathering in the
Executive Council Chamber, Governor’s Office, venue of the ceremony that
his office was inundated with
series of petitions against the leadership of the Oyo State judiciary, many of
them from highly credible sources who are bold enough to indicate their
identities.
The terms of reference for the commission
include: to look into, enquire and investigate the allegations against the
office of the chief judge of Oyo State and the chief registrar of State High
Court as contained in the petition dated July 2004.
