Commissioner calls on govt to cushion effects of policies

By Sola Shittu,

Reporter, Ibadan

Lagos State Finance Commissioner, Dr Adebayo Adewusi, has sent a clarion call to all well meaning individuals to come to the aid of the less privileged in society, saying that successive administrations in the country have failed to take adequate care of the poor.

He said that the job at hand far outweighs what the government at all level can tackle, and expressed his personal desire to continue to cushion the crushing effects of the failure of policies and the inability of governments over the decades to adequately attend to the needs of the people.

Adewusi stated this in Eruwa, Oyo State, at the award of bursaries to 200 students in tertiary institutions and distribution of equipment worth millions of naira to 75 artisans of Ibarapa origin in Oyo State by the Kareem Babatunde Adewusi Foundation (KABAF).

“This means that individual efforts at alleviating poverty and the social imbalance will help the generality of our people to realize their potentials,” he said.

According to him, KABAF was set up to provide succour to the poor even as he solicited for supports from friends and well-meaning people for the foundation.

While noting that privileged individuals have great roles to play in the lives of the less-privileged, Adewusi also reminded government at various levels to continue to strive to seriously address the crushing effects of poverty.

in the land by doing more to create jobs, provide good health care for the needy, and providing education for the children of the poor.

“My belief is that except in few cases, government policies have failed to make the majority to be part of the prosperity.  The attendant results are manifested in the social disorder as typified by armed robbery, arson, youth restiveness and destitution that daily assail our senses”, he said.

He stated further that the army of hungry and angry youths in Nigeria who have suffered untold deprivations in the hands of unfavourable government policies will not allow the children of the privileged to enjoy the wealth cornered by their parents.
