Professor Oyewole Shola of the University
of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB), has commended the on-going economic reforms
in the country, describing it as timely and progressive, but painful.
The don who represented UNAAB’s
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Israel Folorunsho Adu at the third re-union of the
school’s alumni association, Lagos State chapter urged Nigerians to
support the reforms because, according to him, it could bring to an end the
current economic depression as well as usher in development into the country.
Oyewole, who spoke with daily independent
in Lagos, expressed optimism that the nation would soon have cause to rejoice
after passing through the present economic hardships they are witnessing,
adding that no nation has ever succeeded without having to sacrifice for its
economic or political survival.
“I think the present reform
programmes is on the right track and it is progressive but it is painful.
Sacrifice is inevitable. Nigerians need to sacrifice some things now just in
the interest of this country. No country has ever got to its promise land
without making any sacrifice,” said the don.
Oyewole however expressed shock at the
level of poverty in the country, urging the Federal Government to produce a
master plan that would usher in lasting succour to the Nigerian populace.
Asked his impressions about the state of
the nation on its 44th independent anniversary, the don maintained that the
only way Nigeria could move forward is to invest in the youth who, according to
him, is the hope of the country.
“There is hope for the
country”, he said, “ and the only hope is our youth and that is why
it is very important that government and individuals invest in the youth. Our
youth must get their dues from both the government and other stakeholders in
the society,” he added.
