Leaders urged to emulate founding fathers’ virtues

Chinwendu Nnadozie

Special Correspondent, Minna

Nigerian leaders have been urged to emulate the virtues of those who fought for Nigeria’s independence by rendering selfless services towards its growth and development. The admonition was given by the Director-General, Political Bureau, Niger State, Alhaji Baba Umaru, who also advised Nigerians to embrace an all-year round farming to create wealth and reduce poverty. Umaru spoke in an interview marking the 44th Independence Anniversary of the country.

He said Nigerians were suffering not because the economy was poor, but because the leaders neglected the vital areas of the economy and rely more on crude oil.

“In the era of our fore-fathers,” Umaru said, “palm oil, groundnuts pyramid and cocoa were prominent as money earning, while today those God-given sources of wealth have been relegated to the background.”

To be economically buoyant and keep the Nigerian spirit high, Umaru advised all the three tiers of government to be more responsive to the economic growth of the country, and urged Federal, state and local governments to pay more attention to education and agriculture, and educate more Nigerians, especially youths, on new agricultural techniques for increased production.

Besides the present economic crisis, Umar said the leaders had lost focus and respect for the virtues of the past leaders.

‘Our founding fathers — Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Tafawa Balewa, Sir Ahmadu Bello and Chief Obafemi Awolowo had the interest of Nigerians above that of their own,” he said, pointing out that selfless spirit was no longer found among the present Nigerian leaders.
