Treasury looting: NGO fingers 21 govs

LONDON-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), Nigerians for Justice, Equity and Fairness, alleged yesterday that 21 serving state governors in Nigeria operate foreign bank accounts.

Each of the governors it said, had stashed away a minimum of 2 million (about N500 million) in the said accounts.

Spokesman of the NGO, Dr. Jacob Abdullahi, told newsmen in Jos, the Plateau State capital, that the body would soon hand a list containing the identities of the erring governors to the federal government.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the NGO is also investigating and compiling names of ministers and National Assembly members who own foreign bank accounts. The constitution outlaws public office holders from operating such accounts.

Federal Government had often alleged that some state governors were holding foreign bank accounts, adding that once investigations were completed, the cases of such governors would be a matter for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Others Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The list would be made available to the government soon, Dr Abdullahi said, explaining that the NGO’s move would use the due process of the law and not infringe on the individual’s right to privacy.

The NGO, he said, would request the federal government to publish the list of the individuals as well as their bank accounts and assets.

"We would seek assurances from Nigeria House (Nigeria High Commission in the UK) that they would be willing to put the information in the public domain so that Nigerians would know the truth about their politicians," he stated.

After the investigation, he said, the NGO would publish its findings if the government refused to release same to the public.
