Police warn against rallies by Dokubo, Ateke Tom's supporters

By John Ighodaro
Thursday, October 07, 2004

PORT HARCOURT — THE Rivers State police command has warned against a proposed rally by supporters of Alhaji Asari Dokubo and Mr. Ateke Tom of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF) and Niger Delta Vigilante (NDV) respectively. Saying it is not necessary and it’s against public order.

The rebel leaders who returned from Abuja to Port Harcourt and met with a rousing reception in Port Harcourt and in their respective hometowns of Okrika and Buguma have been glowing in the warm reception extended to them by their people.
A day after the arrival of the warlords, the Secretary- General of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Mr. Miabiye Kuromiema, announced plans by the IYC in conjunction with other prominent Ijaw organizations to hold a peace rally in Port Harcourt.

While the IYC scribe was making this announcement, Asari Dokubo was having a peace rally on the streets of Port Harcourt.
Mr. Kuromiema was however quick to point out that the peace rally he had in mind would hold “later in the week.”

He further explained that the proposed rally would feature a scene where the  arch rivals, Ateke Tom and Asari Dokubo would embrace each other publicly thus sealing the reconciliatory moves and that they would then drive through Okrika and Ogu-Bolo.

The Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr. Sylvester Araba has however said that the rally is not necessary.
