MR. Shuaibu Badeju, the president of the Babangida For President Campaign has
declared in a BBC interview in London that General Ibrahim Babanigda (rtd) never wanted to annul the (June 12, 1993) elections adding that he would be a democratic president. Babangida was hijacked; he was overpowered by some elements in the military, he said. When the BBC asked him for his rationale, he retorted “We are not trying to rewrite history . . . (Colonel Muammer) Quadhafi has never conducted elections and he has been in power for decades.
(President) Omar Bongo is still in power in Gabon. (President) Mathieu Kerekou (of Benin) will come and go.
In Togo, (Gnassingbe) Eyadema has been there for too long adding We want stability. We want continuity. We want elections. We want competition. Democracy is competition, leadership and openness . .So, we’re contesting. Anyone who wants to contest is free to do so . Furthermore he explained that IBB has the records. He has talents. He is tactful. He can change things. He can make things happen. He is courageous and he has the ability”.
The BBC then asked him whether his group has talked to Babangida or sought his consent. Badeju answered in the affirmative. According to him “We have talked to him and he has agreed, and he has registered with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) . . His registration number is 007.
He pitched his tent with PDP because it’s the party he has started working with. The party has depth. It’s well spread across the country. It’s a big party for everybody, adding we know it’s not going to be easy. It’s going to be competitive We’re expecting stiff resistance. A stiff competition . and not a rat race. It’s going to be a serious competition; not a military coup. Nobody is going to carry a gun to declare anybody president. No. We are coming through the ballot box and we are going to compete.
