UMUAHIA—THE Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has increased petroleum products allocation to marketers in Abia State from 700,000 to 1,000,000 litres daily to accommodate increasing demand. Special depot Manager of NNPC Osisioma near Aba, Mr. A. A. Atoshie, while exchanging views with the new commissioner for petroleum resources, Chief Simon Emeh, explained that a mechanism has been put in place to check diversion of products.
He urged the commissioner to endeavour to correct anomalies in the system, such as favouritism in the selection of marketers, starving of rural areas of products and diversion as well as help in checkmating incessant vandalization of oil pipelines which he observed, contribute to shortage of products and destruction of farmlands and loss of lives.
In his speech, Emeh urged the management of NNPC to evolve strategies to maintain the current level of supply of petroleum products in the state with special attention to the rural areas. He solicited greater cooperation between his ministry and NNPC in dealing with the vexed issues of economic sabotage in the petroleum industry, including vandalization of pipelines, diversion, meter adjustments, product adulteration, hoarding and other unwholesome practices inherent in the system.
He also complained about the incurable and unrepentant marketers who indulge in nefarious activities, warning that those planning to exploit unsuspecting consumers during the Christmas should have a rethink as his ministry has perfected plans to deal with defaulters.
The commissioner also solicited the assistance of NNPC in sensitizing the masses to come to terms with the global upward adjustment in crude oil prices which has affected domestic prices, while traditional rulers should be made to organize vigilante groups to check the activities of the vandals.
