Errors Scuttle African Literature Award
Afterall, the $20,000 LNG Price for Literature will not be won this year after all. This is because errors (grammatical, syntax and others) were noticed in all the 99 entries for the award.
Even when the panel of judges were able to shortlist six of the books, giving the award to any of the authors might send the wrong signals about the book that is supposed to come tops in the continent.
Sources close to the organisers, however, told The Guardian last night that the judges eventually recognised three books with Condolences by Bina Nengi-Ilagha coming tops but it also contained some errors.
Next is House Of Symbols by Akachi Adimora-Ezigbo while the Fattening House by Omo Uwaifo came third.
According to the sources, because of the inability of the works to measure up to set standards, the organisers agreed with Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka's suggestion that $5,000 each should be presented to the three selected writers.
The $5,000 balance from the $20,000 would be used for educational supports for children in Bonny Island, site of the NLNG project.
Among the dignitaries at yesterday's presentation in Abuja were former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), Soyinka, Professor Barth Nnaji and the Amanayabo of Bonny Kingdom.
