Failed Contract: EFCC to Prosecute Construction Firm
By Bennett Oghifo

The Federal Ministry of Works has concluded arrangements to drag Messrs. JMK (Nig.) Limited, a road contractor, to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for abandoning the Kaura Namoda-Shinkafi-Sabon Birrni Road in Zamfara State, after collecting N500 million advance payment.

Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, at the weekend, told a 17-man delegation of Zamfara North Senatorial District Association, led by Alhaji Ibrahim Birnin Tsaba, a former Secretary to the Zamfara State government that Messrs. JMK (Nig.) Limited, the contractor handling the 60-kilometre road earlier came during the week to plead for permission to carry out work amounting to the N500 million given to him as advance payment but that he refused, based on his conviction that "the contractor has neither the will nor capacity to undertake the project".

Senator Ogunlewe said the Ministry was in the process of terminating the contract and handing the contractor over to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Police to recover public funds in their custody.

He said the Ministry is now putting in place a mechanism for re-awarding the project to a more competent contractor so as to save the economy and people of the area from undue hardship and stress occasioned by the total collapse of that road.

The minister also said the Ministry's Permanent Secretary and himself held a meeting with Messrs Dantata and Sawoe, the contractors handling the Gusau-Kaura Namoda-Dauram-Jibia road, to ascertain the status of their project. Communication by road in that part of the State has almost completely collapsed, because the defunct Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund (PTF) abandoned two bridges and a culvert on the 150-kilometre road when PTF wounded up in 1999.
