Workers in Delta State at the
weekend closed all government offices in Asaba ahead of the strike, while
the police have threatened to deal with anyone that causes a breach of
public peace.
Chairman of the Delta State
chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Mike Okeme, said in a
telephone interview on Sunday that all government offices were going to be
locked up by 6 p.m, stressing that they had perfected all their
strategies.
Okeme said workers have been
fully mobilised for the strike, adding that it is going to be a total
strike and urged the people to join labour in forcing government to revert
to the old prices of petroleum products.
Labour, he said, was not going
to be intimidated in its resolve to go ahead with the strike, adding that
the leadership had just met to put finishing touches to their strategies
and were billed to meet with market women later in the day to seek their
support.
The police commissioner, Mr.
Charles Akaya, who issued the warning in a statement, declared that the
Public Order Act of 1979 was still in force.
The Act provides that public
rallies, processions and meetings will be illegal if permit has not been
obtained. Application for the purpose should be processed to the office of
the Commissioner of Police 48 hours before the occasion for
consideration, he sated.
According to Akaya, anything
done contrary to the provisions of the act would not be tolerated and
advised, that nobody should allow himself or herself to be used by any
body or group to crate unnecessary tension in the
land.
He said
intelligence report indicated that some group of persons were planning to
hijack the situation caused by the recent increase in fuel price to foment
trouble.
