In Oyo, Workers, Students, Stay at Home From Ademola Adeyemo in Ibadan Public officers and students were out of the stressts yesterday in Oyo State, in compliance with the stay at home order announced by the Nigeria Labour Congress, in protest against hike in fuel prices. However, the effect of the strike was reduced by traders and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) who defied the stay at home order and operated without any hindrance for a while. Violence later ensued when protesting students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, clashed with anti-riot policemen who prevented them from protesting outside campus. Trouble began when policemen fired teargas cannisters to disperse the protesting students with no fewer than 30 students sustaining injuries during the clash. The students, who had as early as 6 a.m. locked all offices in the campus, while singing war songs against Obasanjo's administration, attempted to move out of the campus and were prevented by fierce looking policemen who sealed up the main entrance to the school. Medical workers in the state defied the strike, as state hospitals and the University College Hospital (UCH), were fully in operation. But financial institutions in the metropolis shut their doors, in obedience to the order. Security was tight in Ibadan metropolis, as armed policemen stood guard at strategic locations to forestall trouble.
