In Rivers, Politicians Lock Selves in Offices From Donald Andoor and Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt Political office holders who reported for work in Rivers State yesterday locked themselves in their offices, to escape molestation by workers who obeyed the call for indefinite strike yesterday, as ordered by Nigeria Labour Congress over hike in petroleum products prices. Banks, public schools and institutions, including the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA) also observed the strike, as customers were not attended to while students who went to school were sent back. At the state secretariat, normal government activities were completely disrupted,a s civil servants shunned offices to stay at home. Markets in the state were operational and traders were seen carrying out noraml business transactions, with transport operators also in business. Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sylvester O. Araba, has reminded members of the public that provisions of the Public Order Act and other related laws regulating public gathering, processions and assemblies were still in force. "It is imperative to note that the emphasis is sequel to the fact that there is need to maintain absolute security in the state and its environs, particularly in the impending threat issued by Nigeria Labour Congress and other labour unions," he said.
