Naval Men Take over Ports Security
By Francis Ugwoke

Security at the nation's ports was yesterday tightened as officers and men of the Nigeria Navy took over what has over the years been the duty of the police and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) security officers.

Our correspondent who went round Lagos seaports observed that the gates were manned by naval officerss in combat readiness.

Before now, the Navy only patrolled the waters to check piracy and illegal bunkering.

An NPA security personnel told THISDAY that the presence of the Navy was the decision of the Presidency, to provide adequate security at sensitive and strategic locations.

Our source said the Navy is expected to complement the efforts of the Police and NPA, in ensuring adequate security of goods at the nation's seaports.

Apart from this, naval personnel are expected to provide security for ship calling at different ports.

This is following threats by some leaders of the Maritime Workers' Union (MWUN), to deal with any member who report for work during the period of the sit at home order declared by labour.

A visit to the ports showed that although the gates at Apapa port remained open, nobody was allowed to enter.

An official of the NPA who did not want to be quoted said since there was no business activities in the ports, allowing people to go in would amount to security risk for cargoes.

But at Tin Can Island, Lily Pond and Kirikiri Lighter Terminal, the gates remained closed, with the presence of the naval personnel very prominent.

Importers had in anticipation of the strike, made efforts to get their goods out of the ports last week.

Up till Saturday night, importers and their agents were in a rush, clearing goods to ensure they were not affected by the strike.
