NURTW, Others Work in Bayelsa From John Iwori in Yenagoa National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and its affiliate unions in Bayelsa State yesterday jettisoned the call for a nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). NLC had earlier called on all its affiliated bodies to embark on a nationwide strike, with effect from yesterday, to press home its demand for the downward review of the prices of petroleum products. However, THISDAY checks on the streets of the state capital, Yenagoa, revealed that some trade unions, including NURTW, market men and women traders unions, in defiance of the order, went about their businesses. Similarly, commercial motorcyclists, popularly called Okada, had a field day conveying stranded passengers. Non-participation of members of NURTW and okada riders in the on-going strike enhanced free movement of goods and services. While some people were going about their businesses, a visit to the seat of power, Creek Haven, the state secretariat complex and some other government agencies showed that workers fully complied with the NLC sit-at-home order.
