Police, OAU Students Clash

As the nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to protest increase in fuel price hike commenced yesterday, protesting students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, Osun State and men of the state police command clashed in the ancient town yesterday.
Protesting students in hundreds mobilised themselves from their campus to the major streets of the city, to protest the federal government decision to jerk up fuel prices.
The student's action later got to the notice of the police, who then moved en masse to check them from garnering support from members of the public.
Upon getting to Lagere area of the town, the police opened carmisters of tear gas into the crowd thereby causing pandemonium.
Though, there was no reprted loss of life, some sustained serious injuries during the clash.
Speaking on their next line of action, the students' public relation officer, Mr. Peter Olowokandi told reporters in Osogbo that, OAU students would mobilise members of the public for the strike action.
On the other hand, the state Deputy commissioner of police, Mr. Femi Akintemi, when contaeted vowed that the command would not condone any act of indiscipline in the face of the on-going strike action.
Akintemi said the command would not hesitate to crush any person found wanting or staging protest along the streets, except they remained indoors.
Also yesterday, workers and teachers in the state public service sat at their different homes in compliance with the NLC directive to commence the strike action against the increase on the prices of petroleum products.
In Osogbo, the state capital, the state secretariat was deserted while the federal offices located in the state capital were under lock and key.
Public schools were also closed down while only a few private institutiions in the state opened for business.
