Banks, Schools Shut in Uyo From Efem Nkanga in Uyo Schools, Banks and other financial houses closed shop in Uyo yesterday in compliance with the strike action called by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC). Civil servants in the state also stayed at home, with most shops in Eket and Uyo opened skeletally for business as people were observed going about their normal businesses peacefully and without any form of molestation from men of the Mobile Police Unit stationed in stategic places of the capital city. Meanwhile, a joint session of the House of representatives and the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly scheduled to hold at 10 a.m. today could not hold due to the strike action. The civil society coalition yesterday regretted that the seeming peaceful disposition of Akwa Ibom people in the face of severe environmental degradation by oil exploration was perceived as weakness. In a communiqu� released at the end of their meeting, the civil society condemned the hike in the price of petroleum products and called on the people of the state to resist the increase. They also used the opportunity to proteste the non inclusion of the state which is a major producer of oil in the Niger Delta peace commitee by President Obasanjo.
