Also in Niger From Jide Orintunsin in Minna Banking and public activities in Niger State were grounded yesterday, as workers stayed away from their duty posts in compliance with the nationwide strike on fuel price increase. All public schools, local government, state and federal secretariats were under lock and key, while post office, the Nigeria Railway Corporations, as well as other federal government parastatas joined the action. Students of primary and secondary schools were sent back by their teachers who along with others kept faith with the Adams Oshiomole directive. At the General Hospital, Minna the Out-Patient Department (OPD) was deserted, as medical personnel were not found at their post by the few early callers while, the hospitals management offered skeletal services at the in-patient department. For fear of a prolonged action, some people whose relatives are on admission in the hospital were seen moving them out to private hospitals. The action however suffered as a set back in the informal sector of the state economy as marketsopened to customers, while artisans, masons and commercial drivers were seen attending to their duties. Expressing satisfaction over level of compliance, state chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), comrade Garba Labran, told newsmen in Minna that the action was effectively prosecuted in the state, noting that "the strategy is to sit at home, not to engage in any public rally".
