Offices Locked in Ebonyi From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki Workers, in compliance with the strike order of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) stayed away from their offices yesterday in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state. few workers were seen milling around their office premises, which were securely locked, and all the banks operating in the state capital locked their gates against customers, while security men barred customers from gaining entrance, insisting that they were ordered not to open their gate to anybody. All ministries and parastatals in the state secretariat were locked, except the offices of the commissioners whose aides performed skeletal services and essential institutions like Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital and Federal Medical Centre, where workers attended to patients on emergency, customers of All States Bank, Standard Trust Bank, Hallmark Bank Plc and Union Bank Plc, located at the busy Ogoja Road who appeared desperate to cash money were denied entry, as security men insisted that the banks were closed for work. Unlike in the past, workers did not wait to receive directives from the local branch of labour unions before embarking on strike, as there was no indication that the strike was endorsed by the state union leadership.
