Banks, Schools, Shut in Enugu
Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu

Enugu State workers yesterday joined their counterparts across the nation to observe the nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the latest hike in the prices of petroleum products.

But contrary to expectations, the strike did not achieve a total success as only government offices and banks were shut.

At both the state and federal secretariats, the gates were locked and no civil servant was seen around the secretariat complex as those who reported for work hoping that the strike might not hold went back when they met locked gates.

The banks similarly locked their gates, although workers were inside offering skeletal services to special customers.

Along Okpara Avenue, home to most banks, customers were seen clustering at the locked gates seeking entry to transact businesses but security men manning the gates refused them entry.

Students and pupils experienced the same situation when they arrived their various schools in the morning only to be sent back by their teachers, who told them that there would be no teaching till further notice because of the strike.

"Our teachers did not allow us to stay at school. They told us that we should go home because they started strike this morning (Monday morning)," a student of Queens College, who gave her name as Kelechi, told our correspondent.

In the markets, parks and streets of Enugu, it was business as usual with traders, transporters and shop owners, as well as those in private businesses conducting their normal transactions oblivious of any strike action.
