Obasanjo Pledges Improved Trade Ties with Russia From Josephine Lohor in Abuja President Olusegun Oba-sanjo has said more action needs to be taken to improve bilateral relations between the Russian Federation and Nigeria, especially in the area of trade. Obasanjo said this while speaking to the Russian Federation Deputy Foreign Minister, Mr Yuri Fedotov, at State House, Abuja, yesterday. He said he was determined to ensure that Nigeria establishes "a mutual and enduring relationship" with the Russian Federation, adding that "we will not stop the efforts till we get there." He recalled the former Soviet Union's friendship to Nigeria during the civil war, and its prompt and positive response to efforts to establish the Ajaokuta Steel Rolling Mill, and said the two countries must build on these past relations. Obasanjo briefed Fedotov on Nigeira's efforts for peace in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cote d'Ivoire, Darfur and other troubled spots in Africa, as well as the African Union's activities under his chairmanship. Earlier, Fedotov had expressed his country's concern at the low trade volume with Nigeria. He welcomed Obasanjo's "positive contributions to peace in Africa," adding that the African Union was "not a discussion club, but a useful organisation," contributing to global peace. Fedotov is on a West African tour and has visited Cote d'Ivoire Ghana and Liberia. Also yesterday, Obasanjo told a delegation of the African Export-Import Bank that it was important to keep the bank credible and profitable.
