'Nigeria is Progressing in Guinea-Worm Eradication' From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has declared that Nigeria has progressed from being one of the most guinea worm endemic countries in the world to below 500 reported cases. Gowon said this at the opening of the 2004 Review meeting of the Carter Center/Global 2000, which opened in Jos yesterday. He said the country was on the verge of making history in the eradication of the disease, but cautioned that the success made so far should not be taken for granted. His words, "at many occasions whether local or international, I have had to caution all involved not to take our success for granted until the last case of guinea worm is eradicated in Nigeria. Given the different approaches in strategy that might be deployed by the various partners as we work towards WHO certification, every partner must diligently play its assigned role, to ensure that our gains are not reversed." Gowon charged the Minister of Health to take up the challenge of ensuring that both states and local governments get involved and committed to ensuring surveillance are actively maintained in non-endemic guinea worm villages. He commended the Carter Center, partners and other stakeholders for their relentless efforts in meeting the objectives is of eradicating guinea worm completely from the continent.
