State Councils Owe NUJ N50m Welfare packages intended for Journalists by the leadership of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), may soon run into a hitch, as about N50 million are owed by state councils accruing from non-payment of check-off dues. In a statement, National President of the NUJ, Mr Smart Adeyemi, while briefing newsmen in Abuja on the Union major challenges in recent times, blamed the indebtedness on lack of good welfare packages and irregular payment of salaries in some media houses, addding that his administration intends to make welfare of journalists a major priority. He noted that the Union is greatly worried by the poor welfare and irregular payment of salaries in some media organisations adding that this irregular payment has made it impossible for members to pay check-off dues. He suggested that they may have to abrogate the check off and replace it with practice fees, because it is their intention to make NUJ a truly professional body, adding that such an action will make members to be more committed. He said the leadership of the body has recently been engaged in the vanguard of good welfare package for Nigerian journalists, saying one of such measures are Journalists Enhancement Bill presently at the National Assembly.
