Athletes of the Special Sports Federation of Nigeria (SSFN), have demanded to have court with the Sports Minister, Colonel Musa Mohammed (rtd.) over affairs of the federation while rejecting the outgoing President, Mrs. Nkoyo Ibori.
Addressing a press conference inside the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) complex inside the National Stadium, the athletes said through Mr. Uchechukwu Achi: "Mrs Ibori has tried her best. After self-examination and assessment, and having tried two worlds, we realised our past mistakes. We want an able-bodied person as our President. We got one in Mrs. Ibori. Having compared this regime to Mr. Cosmas Okoli's, we realise that the leadership of the President who is having disability like us is not only better but more ideal for us."
Given the acrimonious that took place prior to the election of Mrs Ibori, the athletes publicly apologised to the immediate past president and secretary, Mr. Cosmas Okoli and Mrs. Hauwa Kulu Akinyemi respectively "for our unguarded utterances against them." Also, they begged Chief Yemi Bamgbose "for rejecting him to serve as our President then.
"We want to meet the Minister to dialogue with him on ways forward for our federation. We demand that only people with disability shall serve as President, State Chairman and no less than half of the population of our federation henceforth."
They also decried the second class citizenship that their preparation for the Athens paralympics, the treatment during the games and afterwards.
Tajudeen Agunbiade, who won two gold medals in Sydney but was denied a place in Athens for financial reasons said, "those in Athens got 1,600 Euro unlike the able-bodied who got 4,000 Eurasia.
"Are we not Nigerians? They expected 10 gold medals from the able bodied who returned two bronze medals. They expected nothing from us but we returned five gold medals, yet we were treated as if we are not Nigerians.
