Government Urged to Give Priority to Professionals
By Nsikan Ikpe

Government has been urged to give priority to professionals in their respective area of specialisation to move the nations economy forward.

"Professionals are not given prominent roles in most public offices and this has contributed immensely to the mismanagement of human resources in our democratic environment".

Making this observation recently at the annual conference of the Institute of Management Consultants (IMC), was Ugwudioha Matthias Ofili.

He said professionals should be given an opportunity to exercise their respective roles in governance for a sustainable human resource management in our democratic dispensaion.

Ofili in his paper titled: "Human Resource Management In a Democratic Environment", said "some nations economies are well managed because the countries concerned have good quality human resource capable of controlling materials and other resources for effective productive endeavours".

He noted that "while some countries economies are not well managed is becuase human elements in the economic management are not capable of managing and controlling the materials and other resources for effective production ", he said.

In explaining what human resource management is all about, Ofili said it involve the concept and management of human elements in an organisation or an economy to achieve the desired goal.

Stressing that effective management and control of human resource may result in positive attainment, noting that "it is human beings within the organisation that control materials and other resources, if they are not not properly managed the eventual result may not yield positive result", he maintained.

Continuing, Ofili decried over poor human resource management in a democratic environment in African countries particularly Nigeria, he attributed some of those cuases and failure in human resource management in a democratic dispesatiion to have included inadequate professionals in governance, curruption, lack of skill and the collaps of legal system as well as excesses of political office holders which he said has cuase serious problem in a democratice environmnt, adding that most political appointment presently in the third world counties are given to their party associates rather than giving to qualified and competent people.
