Kano workers stay at home, police refute report of violence
FEDERAL and state workers in Kano yesterday complied with the Nigeria Labour Congress' (NLC) directive to begin a strike against the new fuel prices yesterday.
Banks and other corporate bodies were also shut but commercial bus drivers and motorcyclists were on the road picking passengers.
Markets in the metropolis also opened for business.
But the police have refuted a media report that there was a breakdown of law and order in the state due to the strike.
Spokesman of the Kano Police Command, Alhaji Baba Mohammed, told The Guardian on phone that there was no truth in the report that the Kano metropolis was engulfed in crisis because of the strike.
Mohammed, an assistant superintendent of police (ASP), said: "There is no iota of truth in that story. People are conducting themselves in an orderly manner. We have not heard of reported case of violence or any form of disorder anywhere in the metropolis."
Assuring that men of the command would ensure compliance with law and order, he said the police would not interfere with any lawful activity of Labour throughout the duration of the strike.
Unlike the previous strike, markets in the metropolis were opened.
All the commercial banks and most corporate bodies did not open their offices to customers.
Commuters, however, move freely on Okada (commercial motorcycles) and buses.
An intra-city bus driver, Mallam Musa Mustapha, said drivers did not join the strike because of bitter experiences from the past actions.
His words: "We still remember what happened the last time we joined in solidarity. We were thrown into hunger for days and nobody compensated us. The only beneficiaries were the workers who still collected their salaries at the end of the month. This time around, they should fight it alone. We support them in spirit."
The state and federal civil servants as well as industrial workers complied with the NLC order as they remained at home.
The federal and state secretariats located on the Katsina and State roads were shut.
