Delta workers shun work, traders close markets
From Sunny Ogefere, Asaba

WORKERS and other residents of Delta State yesterday observed the stay-at-home order of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

In Asaba, the state capital, government offices, markets, banks and filling stations were shut as the workers and traders did not report for work or display their wares.

At the state secretariat, the Federal secretariat, the state House of Assembly complex, the High Court complex and the state radio and television stations, all on Okpanam Road, workers shun their offices.

Most shops at the Ogbe-Ogonogo Market were not open while only a few commercial buses and taxis ply the roads.

But commercial motorcyclists, popularly called Okada, were picking persons who came to the road unhindered.

Unlike previous strikes, labour leaders in the state did not go round offices to enforce the stay-at-home order.

"The order is for us to stay at home so we kept to our homes," NLC chairman, Mr. Mike Okeme, said.

Okeme, who later visited his office, said that "the level of compliance is very high," and praised the public for co-operating with Labour.

He hinted that as against four days, the strike action would last for the whole week in the state.

The Labour leader said the extra day "is in honour and solidarity with our able and dynamic President Adams Oshiomhole for his travails in the hands of the agents of the Federal Government."

He, however, praised the state police command for its civility in handling the strike in Delta.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command has warned that it would not allow "miscreants" who claim to be fighting the cause of the people to put the lives and property of law-abiding citizens at a peril.

The state police commissioner, Mr. Charles Akaya, in a statement at Oghara urged law-abiding citizens to go about their lawful businesses as the police would ensure that they were fully protected.

He said: "We are all aware the pump price of petroleum products was marginally increased by marketers and members of the public have never hidden their respective views. Freedom of opinion is a function of democracy but not to the extent of infringing on the freedom of association of others through intimidation, disruption of public peace and compulsion of action."

Constitutional means of resolving conflicts is also synonymous with democracy.`
