Borno NUJ honours Sheriff, Marwa, others
FOR their outstanding contributions to nation building, the Borno State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has honoured the state governor, Ali Modu Sheriff and two of his predecessors, Alhaji Mohammed Goni and Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd).
Other awardees included the wife of the former Inspector-General of Police, Hajiya Amne Kam Salem and a veteran journalist, Mr. Abiodun Joseph.
Presenting the awards to the awardees at the Maiduguri International Hotel, the chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Saleh Mahdi, said the honour was in recognition of their contributions to national development.
He explained that the correspondents' week which has the theme: "The Media, Democracy and the challenges of nation building" has reflected an appropriate timing for recognising these rare gems in the country.
The selection of each of the awardees, he added, was based on their respective merit, hardwork, integrity and service to humanity at the national and state levels.
He added that Sheriff was honoured for progressive policies, which provided better homes for the people, stressing that Marwa was recognised because of his contributions to the socio-economic and political advancement of both Borno and Lagos states where he served as governor at various times.
Marwa while responding on behalf of the awardees said the media has a great challenge in the protection and sustenance of democracy, adding that journalists have a role to play in ensuring democracy and good governance in the country.
He said that in overcoming the challenges faced by the media, a solid foundation has to be built before democracy and good governance could be achieved.
Such foundation, Marwa said, is being built by President Olusegun Obasanjo on which democracy could be protected and sustained in the fifth and sixth republics.
He told journalists that Sheriff has done well in the housing, education, agriculture and health care delivery service sectors.
On his part, he said that they (awardees) would continue to do more so that the living conditions of the people could be improved.
He, however, called on the people, particularly the electorate to elect their leaders based on the fear of God, sincerity, trust and sense of justice.
