Enugu suspends launching of SEEDS project
FOLLOWING the on-going nationwide strike which began yesterday, the Enugu State government was compelled to suspend indefinitely the launching of the State Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (SEEDS).
The strike also paralysed economic and academic activities in the state with all banks, primary and post-primary institutions as well as tertiary institutions completely shut down in compliance with the NLC directive.
At the Michael Okpara Square venue of the SEEDS' launching, a crowd of community representatives and government officials had gathered and waited for several hours for the event to kick off when a government official mounted the rostrum and announced the indefinite postponement of the much-publicised event, citing the current industrial action as responsible for the shift.
The State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Chief Ayogu Eze, later told reporters that the government decided to postpone the launch so as not to be seen as "anti-Labour", adding that the event would be rescheduled.
Also, bank customers in the state capital who went to transact business yesterday were disappointed as they met closed doors and left after waiting for hours without getting attention from the bank officials who locked in themselves.
Students who went to school were sent back by their teachers while the state's secretariat as well as some federal establishments were closed down as workers obeyed the stay-at-home order.
Speaking after monitoring the strike, the state chairman of the NLC, Mike Eneh, said workers complied with the order, stressing that the yardstick for measuring compliance in the state, believed to be a civil service one, "is that all offices were shut, schools closed down, and there was no flight from Enugu Airport."
He was, however, not happy with members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and workers of Radio Nigeria, Enugu whom he accused of disobeying the stay-at-home order.
He warned that from today, "we will march force with force with those organisations which want to frustrate our efforts," adding that during his visit to Radio Nigeria, he was told that the station was doing "partial transmission", which he said was unacceptable to Labour.
Eneh commended workers in the state for their understanding, adding that there was no incident of violence in the state on account of the strike.
